Abstract

Cigarette with filter provided with incisions or tracings following uninterrupted lines which have little resistance to tearing, having firmly closed edges that the smoker will space by deformation of the filter under the mere pressure of the fingers as soon as he has lit the cigarette so as to have the edges in a position of open lips which will allow ambient air to enter the filter.

Description

Cigarette with filter and its manufacturing process.
It is known that the only pleasure of the cigarette smoker is not only the smoke but, in large part, the very gestures, of lighting, of holding the cigarette and the need to pull on the lit cigarette.
The invention described below and accompanied by a drawing has as its object cigarettes allowing the smoker to perform all these gestures without sucking in the smoke, therefore without making him run health hazards, or to allow him to suck a mixture of air-smoke, therefore a smoke very diluted by the air as will emerge from the description below.
The various more or less complicated but ineffective designs of filters already known are intended to reduce the harmfulness of the smoke by trying to modify the content of nicotine and tars. Thus, several categories of filters proposed provide channels housed inside the filter basket itself; other designs use, strips glued to the outside of the sleeve which shrink with the heat of the smoke, having the role of reducing the amount of smoke passing through the filter, without however stopping it or decreasing its concentration.
On the other hand, in the German patent application filed on 29.2.1968 under number P 1657.242.2, there was proposed a filter system characterized by a sliding ring on the sleeve, with the aim of gradually modifying the coantity sucked in smoke without, however, stopping its integration into the filter depending on whether the said sliding ring is moved along the sleeve, more or less covering the permanently open inlets, the invariable importance of which has been determined once and for all during the cigarette manufacturing process. It is known, however, that it is particularly difficult to light the cigarette when the ambient air freely enters the interior of the sleeve if it has side openings.
The invention consists mainly in that the cigarette provided with a filtering tip, has a sleeve whose side i is provided with very fine elongated incisions 1 (fig.1, or a path weakening the envelope of the filter, showing the shape of unbroken lines, without allowing the entry of ambient air into the interior of the sleeve 4, since around these incisions having the shape of unbroken lines, the wall of the sleeve continues to act as lips 2 firmly tightened and it is only after the cigarette has been lit that these zones 2 will be burst, the slots according to the invention being long enough to transform them into open lips 3 as shown in FIG. 2, allowing, from this moment, the free entry to the ambient air towards the inside of the sleeve. Thus, the suction power of the smoker, necessary at the time when he lights the cigarette, will not be reduced, because zones 2 surrounding the s fine incisions in the form of uninterrupted lines applied to the wall of the sleeve 4 have remained firmly tightened and will not be discarded to adopt the position of open lips 3 until after the cigarette has been lit, which will be caused as a result of a slight deformation of the wall of the sleeve either under the sole pressure of the fingers, or as a result of a twisting movement carried out between the thumb and the index finger of the hand for example, around its central axis or by a compaction in the exial direction which will shorten its initial length, this shortening being obtained under the thrust that the smoker will exert at the free end of the sleeve in order to create wide lateral air intake openings 3 towards the mass filter which has just been stripped around the incisions 1, elongated, hitherto closed.
By applying a slight twisting movement to the sleeve around its central axis, the lips will adopt a twisted position, their edges thus moving away from each other, creating suction openings 3 thus allowing the entry of ambient air. . From this moment and not before, the aspirations of the smoker will be fully satisfied by the air volume penetrating through the slots now already open and consequently the suction force of the smoker is canceled in the direction of the part filled with tobacco 5, becoming thus too weak to stoke the fire of the lit cigarette nor to drain its smoke towards the filtering mass that the smoke will therefore no longer be able to pass through, leaving the cigarette to burn on its own, the aspirations of the smoker not reaching it.
In the case where the edges of the openings are not spread slightly, the smoker can still suck in smoke but, it will be mixed with ambient air entered by the lips although very slightly spread.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the depth of the notches 1, in unbroken lines will be so reduced as a result of a limitation of the penetration of the tracer tool that the fine incisions previously described will be reduced to superficial traces which will have marked the outer face of the sleeve which is thus weakened there, these traces constituting lines of least resistance to tearing which will be caused only after lighting the cigarette thanks to a delormation of the sleeve, these tears thus created forming at the lips open to ambient air towards the inside of the sleeve. The operation of tracing the lines of least resistance will be carried out according to the technique well known in the paper and cardboard industry using tracers not illustrated which may have the form of milks, collets or engraved cylinders. Thus the strength of the suction of the smoker which is necessary at the time when the cigarette is lit, will not be reduced, the lips 2 as shown in fig.l framing the fine uninterrupted incisions applied to the wall of the chest, will remain tightly tight and will not be spread to adopt the position of large openings 3 (fig.2) only after the cigarette has been lit, being spread aisni as a result of the deformation of the sleeve, executed as described above, the filter mass coming to be stripped as a result of the deformation of the lips 2. The uninterrupted incisions may follow the form of curved lines, wavy lines, in a zig-zag or straight line, parallel or inclined to the central axis of the sleeve. Before carrying out the deformation of the sleeve intended to cause the tears, the continuity of the sleeve wall will not be interrupted yet, since the tracing of the imprints weakening the wall, presents only a primer to the tear which will be subsequently caused. These lines of least resistance can be traced by imprints following continuous lines which thinner and therefore weaken the wall of the link to give rise thereafter to long suction slits which will have been formed as a result of subsequent deformation, applied to the sleeve after lighting the cigarette. According to another alternative embodiment, the incisions 7 shown in fig.3 can be applied perpendicular to the length direction of the filter 4. They can be stored in parallel on the two opposite sides of the filter, staggered. This embodiment allows the smoker to spread the notches 7 at will, by extending the initial length of the sleeve 4 to the hinge of an accordion or else tightening it by a compacting movement of the length of the sleeve, thus being able to adjust the volume of outside air admitted towards the inside of the sleeve. The smoker is thus able to reinforce or decrease; after lighting the cigarette, the strength of its suction, thus being able to adjust itself the volume of the smoke, i.e. to completely stop the passage if he feels the need or to dose the concentration of the air-smoke mixture. The cigarette designed according to the invention allows however as long as one has not created widened openings, having deliberately avoided deforming the sleeve, to suck in the pure smoke and to wash down, as with any other normal cigarette. However, the smoker can stop receiving the smoke as soon as he has, at his desire, and at any time, decided to create the air intake openings, by deforming the sleeve as described above.
It is therefore easy to light the cigarette, object of 1 (invention, the draft necessary for this being in no way altered since the ambient air cannot yet penetrate laterally towards the inside of the filter sleeve. It is therefore only when the cigarette is already lit normally without difficulty that the smoker will create the air intake openings, either to stop the arrival of smoke, or to establish a mixture of air with the smoke.
