lUNiirnn Starts Attivit rricn,
HENRY O. PRESTON AND OTHNIEL PRESTON, OF HORNELLSVILLE, NEW YORK.
DUS'DBEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,585, dated July 16, 1901.
Application filed March 13, 1901. Serial No. 50,955. (No model.)
To all whom t 11i/ty concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY C. PRESTON and OTHNIEL PRESTON, citizens of the United States, residing at I-Iornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Heaters and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in carpet beaters or whips.
It has for its object more especially to provide for securing the wire or the strands thereof in the handle 4in a simple, effective, and readily-removable way also, to avoid the tendency of the strands or wire of the whip to break or snap off at the handle in the using thereof.
It consists of a handle having a deep slot opening out through the ends thereof with an inner angular end or terminal and the walls of its outer end beveled or iiared outward and of the combination therewith of the whip proper, comprising strands or a continuous wire, with the innerend or ends thereof adapted to engage the inner angular end or terminal of said slot, all substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of our invention, Figure 1 is a side view. elevation. Fig. 3 isa broken detached perspective view of the handle. Fig. 4 is a detached section through the slotted end of the handle, the-remaining portion thereof being broken away.
In carrying out our invention we construct i the whip or beater of a handle 1 and a pref erably continuous wire 2, malle in loop form, with its terminals or ends let into and fastened to the handle, a suitable ferrule 2X being slipped upon the reduced portion of said handle in contact with said wire where it en- Fig. 2 is a sectional l ters the handle, as shown. Said handle has a longitudinal central slot 3 opening ont through one end thereof and extending thereinto a suitable depth to receive the inner ends or terminals of the wire or beater proper, 2, with its inner end or bottom extending a short distance at an approximate right angle to the main portion thereof, as at 3*. Said rightangled terminal or extension 3iL of said slot is produced in its detailed outline, preferably as shown, one wall of said slot at its extreme inner end being inclined or deflected slightly, out of a right line. The other wall of said slot is similarly deiiected or inclined directly opposite the first referred to inclination, somewhat, however, at a more abrupt angle, the bottom of said slot also being inclined, sloping away from the last-named wall downward to the opposite inclination, as shown. This arrangement provides for the reception of an inner angular or bent portion 2a of the wire 2 to prevent endwise displacement of the latter when in use. Said arrangement differs from the extending of the free or inner ends of the wire toward each other in alinement with the slot 3 in that no additional means, as a cross-bar or like retaining device disposed within the handle, is required to aid the retention in place of the wire. The slot 3 has its .walls iiared or beveled outward at their upper edges, as at 3b, to remove the wire or strands of the beater from contact with any sharp edges or angles, as would otherwise be the case, to prevent the liability of the breaking or snapping off of the wire or strands at the handle in the using of the whip die provided with a slot, whose inner end is4 In testimony whereof we affix our signaat an angie to its main or body portion and tures in presence of two Witnesses.
outer end beveled or ared outward, and its HENRY C. PRESTON. Wire or Whip, proper, provided With inner OTHNIEL PRESTON. angular terminals, adapted to engage Iche an- Witnesses:
gie of said slot, and a ferruie, substantially as EDWIN L. DOBSON,
